Bronwyn Richardson

Born: December 16, 1994
Home Club: Royal Canadian Yacht Club
Boat: Laser Radial

I'm Bronwyn, 19 years old and currently pursuing my dream to become an Olympic Sailor. I have been a member of the Ontario Sailing Team for 3 years now, and have been funded through the Quest For Gold program for two. My home club is the Royal Canadian Yacht Club although I am currently training out of the new National Training Centre (Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club) with both the Ontario Provincial Team and the Canadian Sailing Team.

I grew up sailing at the RCYC Junior Club, starting in the learn to sail program when I was 6, joining the Opti Race Team when I was 9 and moving to the High Performance Team the year I turned 16. Summers were always a favourite part of my year, spending endless hours out on the water and travelling around the lake to various regattas with my team.

My first experience with international racing was when I was 14. I qualified to represent Canada in the Optimist dinghy at the North American Optimist Championships in the Dominican Republic. The experience of travelling to a different country and meeting hundreds of sailors from around the world, all because we loved to spend time sailing around in our little bathtubs opened my eyes and made me realize that this was something I really loved and wanted to pursue.

Although not officially on the Canadian Sailing Team, I have been identified by coaches and join the radial team for training when possible.  My current goal is to qualify for the Canadian Sailing Team so that I can continue to train with the best radial sailors in Canada.

Aspiring to being an Olympian is a huge goal and requires enormous commitment and dedication not to mention time, energy, money, focus and, in the case of sailing, hours on the water and in the gym. I am grateful for the support I have received, and continue to receive, from friends and family, the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Ontario Sailing Association, my team mates, my training partners and my coaches.
